FUNCTIONAL COMMUNICATION TRAINING
Functional Communication Training is an evidence-based method of teaching meaningful communication in the child’s natural environment. This is done by replacing difficult behaviors with functionally equivalent and socially acceptable replacement behaviors.
The purpose of Functional Communication Training is to increase the child’s verbal repertoire while reducing problematic behaviors.
Functional Communication Training increases communication. It is a pre-requisite for teaching more complex skills. Functional Communication increases access to other environment and typically results in improve interactions with others. The more communication the child has, the more they are able to communication their wants and needs. When communication increases, those problematic behaviors tend to decrease. Think about FCT this way: when communication goes up, behaviors go down. Why? Because the child now has a verbal repertoire to get their needs met and they no longer need to yell, kick, scream or engage in those problematic behaviors. They can simply use their language.
PICTURE EXCHANGE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM
The Picture Exchange Communication System is an evidence-based method of teaching functional communication through the use of exchanging visual symbols.
The purpose of the Picture Exchange Communication System is to teach and promote functional communication and social skills that generalize.
The Picture Exchange Communication System is important for learners with speech and language delays because it allows the child with little to no communication abilities to communicate through the use of visual icons. By increasing a child’s communication, they are more equipped to get their needs and wants communicated and met. Typically, this decreases frustration and helps to decrease problematic behaviors that were caused by a lack of communication.
